Last Week's Events (including photos) and This Week's Events

Hi Families,
Thank you for such a great turnout to our Winter Festival yesterday! Sorry if I didn't connect with you. I tried to make sure I greeted all children and family members. I hope you all had a wonderful time!

Last week the children dived into our second expedition and discovered through a series of engaging activities that their first "living thing" is a bulb. Each child received his bulb, observed the bulb and created a detailed drawing of the bulb. Did you see the work on the wall in our room? Amazing drawings for kindergarten children! Below you will see the sequence of learning experiences which are taking place in our room.

Sequence of learning experiences:
1. Mystery container observation and prediction  (done)
2. Mystery bulb observation and prediction (predictions included: praying mantis sack, lizard egg, some kind of plant, grass, onion, garlic)
3. Mystery pictures (tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, crocus, onions, trees, bushes, sunflowers, roses, potato) (after viewing all the possibilities all children decided that the bulb was some kind of living plant e.g., baby tree, onion, baby bush, a plant that would grow and have flowers)
4. Scientist observation and drawing of the bulb (children also used the iPad to photograph their bulbs).

5. Predicting what needs to go in the pot to support a living thing (done)
6. Plant bulb (each child planted his own bulb)

Roy and Owen planting their bulbs

Rachel and Henry planting their bulbs

7. Care for bulb  - starting week of January 30, 2012
8. Document growth- starting week of January 30, 2012
9. Bulb Experiments
1.                   Upside down bulb - start on Tuesday, January 31, 2012
2.                   Bulb in the dark - start on Wednesday, February 1, 2012
5.                   Hydroponics - start on Thursday, February 2, 2012
9. Seed Investigations
1.                   Seed observations and sorting
2.                   Growth and comparison of different seedlings
10.           Plant Propagation

If your child is so excited that she wants you to come to the classroom and see the plants, please know
you are welcome at any time.

Writing Focus
Children are learning how to make a How To book. They have planned a first book e.g., How to
Brush my Teeth. Each child chose what he would write about. Tomorrow we will create the plans for
a How To book which shows how to plant a bulb.

Reading
We are listening to and reading lots of nonfiction, short books connected with our expedition e.g., The
Life Cycle of a Carrot. In addition, I meet with small groups for reading every day.

Math Focus
We have embarked on a unit of measurement, both nonstandard and standard measurement. Last week
children measured each other using feet as the measure. We discovered that people have different sizes of
feet. I read a book, The King's Feet, to the children which illustrates this difference in sizes. Now we are
measuring around the room using rulers. On Friday each child found, drew, and labeled something that
was longer than a ruler and something that was shorter than a ruler.
This week we will:
  • measure our bulbs using cubes
  • compare foot sizes (longer/shorter)
  • count by fives
  • play a money game where children exchange pennies for dimes
  • play a money game where children exchange pennies for nickels
  • we are practicing writing numbers the correct way (many children still reverse numbers when they write them)
  • we are talking about the 100th Day of School which is coming up this week. I encourage you to help your child count out 100 small objects e.g., buttons and send them to school for the 100th Day (I will check which day it will be).

IAs
This week the children go to P.E. Please send appropriate footwear for running around.

Have a Wonderful Week,
Kathy

An Exciting (but short) Week!

Hi Families,
This week we have:

  • Photos from Mira's birthday celebration
  • We start our science based expedition (Life Through the Eyes of a Scientist)
  • No school for students on Friday (Teacher Workday)
  • Reminder that children should be making their valentines for all members of our crew at home (we make  our cards instead of buying valentines)
Mira celebrated her sixth birthday this week!
Mira made her journey around the sun six times and then shared yummy cheese sticks with our crew. Mira is so proud to be a whole six years old!!!

We have started our second semester expedition which is a science-based expedition. This week we read about and discussed what scientists do and what types of tools they use in their work. Tomorrow the children receive "mystery containers." These containers will house the first living thing each child will have and care for at school. The children will examine the containers and make predictions about what might live in them. Be sure to ask your child about his/her mystery container and what he thinks will live in it.
Guiding Questions (questions we explore) for this Expedition are:

How do scientists think and learn?
What tools do scientists use to measure and observe living things?
What do living things need in order to grow?
How are living things different and the same?
How can living things be sorted?

Learning Targets (what children will be learning) for the children include:

I can observe, document, and explain the changes a living thing goes through
I can describe and explain how a scientist thinks and learns about living things
I can investigate what a living thing needs to grow and perform the care needed
I can look at how living things can be sorted and analyze the attributes for sorting
I can invent my own way to sort living things and describe it to someone else

Just a reminder that homework is for your child to make a valentine for each member of his crew. We always make our own valentines (instead of purchasing them at the store). The children are so excited on Valentine's Day when they receive these special cards!

Happy Birthday Caleb!

Hi Families,
Yes, we had a number of birthdays last week! Caleb celebrated his sixth birthday on Friday. He walked around the sun for each year of his life. Caleb told us something he thought he did each year.
Caleb brought fresh fruit to school and each child made his own fruit kabob. The children enjoyed this activity.
Thanks Caleb!

Happy Birthday Van!

Hi Families,
Van celebrated his sixth birthday last week.

Here are photos of Van walking around the sun.
He was so proud of himself and told us what he did when he was one...two...three...etc.
The birthday treats were delicious slices of green apple. Children loved the food!

Happy Birthday Henry!

Hi Families,
Henry celebrated his birthday with our crew last week. First Henry walked around the sun six times to remember each year of his life. Next, he handed out Ants on a Log (celery, cream cheese and raisins).
What a yummy treat!

Happy Birthday Kayleigh!

Hi Families,
January is a celebration month for us. We have a number of crew members celebrating birthdays!
Kayleigh had a birthday during our Winter Break. We celebrated with Kayleigh and enjoyed yummy cheese sticks and raisins.

                                                           Happy Birthday Kayleigh!

First Week Back

Hi Families,
Happy New Year!

Your children seem to have had growth spurts in the short time we were away from school! They were also happy and excited to be back at school playing with friends, reading new books and writing about their adventures during our break.

This week we embarked upon a new adventure. Our crew became scientists. We explored the question, "What will sink and what will float?"

Everyone got to experience choosing objects, predicting what would happen when they were dropped in water and recording the results.

Your child might want to continue the experiment when she/he has a bath by taking a few items to the tub, predicting what will happen, and then dropping the items in the water. Children are sharing their "tub" experiences at school the next day.

When we read a big book about scientist the children noticed that scientists often wear white coats/shirts. That made us think we might like to dress like scientists when we do our experiments. However, I don't want this to be a problem for anyone. If you have one or two old white shirts that you could donate would you please email me? If I am unable to round up enough shirts I will drop the idea. It is just a detail and not necessary.

It is so important for children to share their writing with others. We make room in our day to celebrate the wonderful stories we write, to share them with each other and to ask questions of the authors.

Children are using the computers in our room to support learning of word families.
They use the computers independently and enjoy the activity.

During math block we have been discussing and exploring sequencing e.g., every child made a sequence chart of their day (something they do at the start of the day, something at the middle of the day, and something they do at the end of the day).

Have a great weekend!
Kathy
