Mathematics in Kindergarten
We use the Everyday Math Kindergarten Curriculum. I love all the manipulatives, the hands-on activities, and the games which make learning so fun-filled for young children. Children get to EXPERIENCE math.

We start math with "Blast-Off!" This is a counting down activity from 10 to 0. We stand around the rug and pass a stuffed toy around so that each child says a number. When we get to zero children jump as high as they can and yell, "Blast Off!" The children are always so excited to do this activity.

Every day we have a different mini lesson (short, whole group activity) such as Sound and Motion Patterns which includes movements, singing a patterned song, and reading a book with patterns. Earlier this week we did Body Height Comparisons finding items which were taller or shorter than our bodies. We collected the data on a chart.

We might do simple story problems using manipulatives such as bears or tiles. I make the story problems be about the children e.g., Savanna found two baby rabbits, Sydney found three more. How many baby rabbits did they find?

Children work with a buddy each day when they choose from a variety of independent math activities. This is a time when children strengthen skills.
